Potrivit învăţăturii şi credinţei creştine, viaţa omului nu se sfârşeşte o dată cu moartea trupului, iar sufletul îşi continuă existenţa şi dincolo de hotarele vieţii pământeşti. Din acest motiv, nu dăm uitării pe cei adormiţi nici după înmormântarea lor, ci îi pomenim pururi, ne rugăm şi mijlocim pentru odihna şi pentru iertarea păcatelor lor.
Cât timp suntem în viaţă putem să facem toate pentru sufletele noastre: să priveghem, să postim, să ne rugăm continuu etc. Imediat ce murim, însă, nu mai putem face nimic pentru acestea. Însă dacă cineva vorbeşte lui Dumnezeu despre cei răposaţi, îl va auzi Dumnezeu, îi va asculta rugăciunea. Cu alte cuvinte în faţa lui Dumnezeu este utilă şi folositoare „mijlocirea”. Când cei dragi nouă pleacă din lumea aceasta, lasă în urma lor o rugăminte, care sună mai degrabă a poruncă: „…vă rog pe toţi şi cu stăruinţă cer vouă să vă rugaţi neîncetat lui Hristos-Dumnezeu pentru mine, ca să nu fiu rânduit, după păcatele mele, la locul de pedeapsă, ci să mă aşeze unde este lumina vieţii” (Slava de la Slujba înmormântării). Aşadar, cei adormiţi doresc să ne pese totdeauna de ei. Întotdeauna să facem ceva pentru sufletele lor.
