Acest sfânt a trăit în Dalmatia, şi luând de la un oarecare pustnic, cinstitul sânge, care a curs din coasta Domnului şi Dumnezeului şi Mântuitorului nostru Iisus Hristos, făcea cu dânsul lecuiri. Pentru aceasta a fost ucis, noaptea, cu vicleşug de cei necredincioşi. Dar odorul acesta a rămas iarăşi la ucenicul sau cu paza.
Tot in această zi pomenirea sfintei împărătese Pulcheria
Sfânta Impărăteasă Pulcheria, fiică a împăratului bizantin Arcadius (395-408), a fost coregenta şi asfatuitoare a fratelui ei sora cu Teodosie cel Mic (cel Tânar: 408-450). A primit o educaţie aleasă şi s-a remarcat prin întelepciune şi credinţa, studiind învătăţura ortodoxă. Prin eforturile ei s-a zidit biserica Prea Sfintei Născătoarei de Dumnezeu (Teotokos) la Vlaherne, precum şi alte biserici şi mănăstiri. De asemeni, cu ajutorul ei a fost convocat Sinodul al III-lea Ecumenic şi erezia lui Nestorie a fost condamnată.
Din cauza intrigilor împărătesei Evdochia (Eudochia) – soţie a împăratului Teodosie cel Mic – Pulcheria a fost înlăturată de la putere, aşa încăt ea s-a dedicat credinţei şi rugăciunii într-o viaţă de retragere. Totusi, când dezordinea a început să pună stapânire pe Imperiu, la cererea fratelui ei, împăratul Teodosie cel Tânar, Pulcheria a revenit şi a reuşit să calmeze spiritele încinse de ereticii vremii.
Dupa moartea lui Teodosie cel Mic, Marcian (450-457) a fost ales împărat. Sfânta Pulheria a vrut din nou să se retragă, dar atât împăratul cât si ceilalţi demnitari ai Imperiului au rugat-o să nu refuze tronul, aşa că a devenit logodnica a lui Marcian (Marchian). Pentru binele Imperiului a consimţit să devina soţia lui Marcian, cu condiţia să i se permită să-şi păstreze fecioria chiar în căsătorie. Aşa încât împăraţii au trăit în curăţie, ca frate şi soră, până la sfârşit.
Prin eforturile ei s-a convocat Sinodul al IV-lea Ecumenic de la Calcedon, în anul 451, unde au fost condamnate învăţăturile eretice ale lui Dioscor şi Eutihie.
În tot cursul vieţii ei sfânta Pulcheria a apărat învăţătura ortodoxă a credinţei împotriva diferitelor erezii ale timpului. A adormit cu pace întru Domnul la 54 de ani, în anul 453, după ce a dat o mare parte din bunurile ei săracilor.
Tot în această zi, pomenirea Sfintilor Apostoli Apelie (Apelles), Luca (Luciu) şi Climent (Clement
Alt Apelie a fost acesta, şi altul a fost cel ce a fost episcop la Iraclia Traciei. De acesta pomeneşte Pavel Apostolul la Epistola către Români (16, 10), că s-a facut luminator Smirnei şi fiind episcop al acestei cetăţi şi slujind lui Dumnezeu cu cuviinţă, către Dânsul a călătorit.
De asemenea şi acest Luca, n-a fost evanghelistul, ci acela de care mărturiseşte Fericitul Pavel în Epistola către Timotei, că a fost arhiepiscop în Laodiceea Siriei, şi bine păstorind-o, s-a mutat către Domnul. Iar unii zic că acesta este unul şi acelaşi cu Luciu, pe care Apostolul Pavel îl pomeneşte în aceeaşi epistolă către Romani (16, 21).
Iar Climent (Clement) acesta, este cel de care pomeneşte Apostolul Pavel în Epistola către Filipeni (4, 3) ca fiind “împreună-lucrător cu el”. Sfântul Apostol Clement a fost făcut episcop al Sardiei (sau Sardica, în Asia Mica), şi purtând rănile lui Hristos pe trupul sau, către Domnul a răposat.
Aceştia sunt cu toţii scrişi în Cartea Vieţii şi se praznuiesc împreună cu ceilalti 70 de apostoli în ziua de 4 ianuarie.
Tot în această zi, pomenirea Sfântului Petru Marturisitorul, mitropolit de Niceea, care cu pace s-a săvârşit.
Sfântul Petru a fost episcop de Niceea şi a apărat credinţa ortodoxa în vremea luptei iconoclaste din timpul domniei împăratului Leon Isaurul (813-820). A mărturisit şi suferit pentru credinţa sa, şi a murit în anul 823. De la Sfântul Teodor Studitul (prăznuit la 11 noiembrie) ni s-au păstrat opt scrisori către sfântul episcop Petru, scrise între anii 816-823.
